*Top Of The Class*
Horse: First Class
Rider: Chloe Paisley
Chloe admired the chestnut colt as he was lead back to the barn. His muscles rippled, head held high, and nostrils flaring. He walked quietly beside Darby. He was a young horse, just a yearling, but he was well built. He had yet to even have a taste of the track. Turf was his specialty. His bloodlines certainly showed it. He would be at the top of his class by the time he was ready to start his 2 year old season in Y15. He was very promising.
Chloe followed them into the prospect barn. Lucy was in Diva's stall, running her hands down the filly's legs. She stood up and gave Chloe a smile. "I'm glad you're here" she said to her. "I'm glad you're giving me the opportunity with Chez. I'm happy to be here" Chloe said.
Darby had put Chester on crossties and was getting him finely groomed. Lucy and Chloe made their way to his front. They wanted to get a good look at him. He pointed his ears in their direction and gave them a bold look. He stood still as Darby finished up. She gave him a small pat on the back and went to the tack room to get his tack.
This first work is going to be just 9 furlongs. I want him to get a feel for it. He likes to dominate. I know you have good hands for that. Was going to give Connor the mount, but felt he would be just too quiet for this horse. Chester needs someone he knows is there and talks to him" Lucy said to Chloe. "I see. Well I'm prepared for whatever he has in store for me" Chloe responded.
Darby came out and started tacking Chester up. He was still standing quietly, eyes locked on Lucy and Chloe. He had settled in nicely at Durango and was getting used to everyone and the horses. He was going to love it there. He let out a snort as Darby tightened the girth. He tilted his body backwards then straightened up again. "I found one thing he doesn't like, the tightening of the girth" Darby said with a laugh.
The three of them lead Chester out of the barn. He took in the sights. He started prancing sideways when he noticed the turf oval. He was getting filled with excitement. He tugged at the lead, but Darby kept a tight hold. Lucy got to his other side and grabbed his bridle to steady him. Chloe followed behind them, glancing at the colt's chiseled hindquarters. He was going to be quite the ride. She could feel it. She couldn't wait to see how he would react to the turf for the first time. He was a little wiry but she knew he would become a whole different horse once she took him out and around.
Once they reached the rail, Lucy gave Chloe a leg up. Chester balked sideways. It was different, him having a rider on his back. He wanted to run. He didn't want to stand still much longer. Chloe could hear his breathing much clearer. He was looking ahead, glancing down the oval. Chloe gathered the reins up and pressed her heels to his sides.
It was a bit of a bumpy ride to start out. He was hopping instead of jogging. He was trying to pull at her, get ahead of her. She wouldn't allow it. "No" she said sternly. He eased himself out a little bit and got into a smoother gait. They were going at a good pace. Chloe was happy with him. She jogged him around for a little bit, warming him up, letting him get a feel for it.
Once she urged him to a canter, he balked sideways, again. He threw his head up and gave a whinny of protest. She pulled him to a stop and started running her hand down his neck to soothe him. "It's alright, boy. I'm not going to hurt you. You're doing so well. We're a team. Just you and me. We can do this together" she said calmly. With soft hands she gathered him up, again, and urged him up to a canter. This time he went with ease.
The 9 furlong marker was ahead. Chloe swallowed hard. She was a little nervous, but knew he could do it. She knew they would be fine. She was up and ready for it. As soon as she let him go, he was off. He dashed ahead setting a good pace. Chloe locked hold of him and hung on for the ride. They dashed down the back stretch. Chester was practically flying. Chloe was letting him go. He had his heart pouring into his run. He was sprinting by the time they rounded the final turn into the stretch.
The stretch was Chester's favorite part of the track. He slipped into a whole other gear as they made their way down the stretch. Chloe gave him all he needed. He flew to the finish, barely out of breath. He was a very energetic horse. He snorted happily as Chloe pulled him up. He was a great ride.
