*Carrying On The Legacy*
Horse: A Royal Legacy
Rider: Ariel Paisley
The sun was rising just above the hills when Ariel and Lucy met at the front parking lot. Lucy was bundled up in a hoodie and scarf, a wool hat on her head. There was a chill in the air, though it wasn't that cold. "Are you ready to meet him?" she asked. Ariel smiled and replied "Of course I am." Lucy let her get her things out of her car. Then, she lead the way to the older stock barn.
It was quiet when they entered. Only two horses were stabled in the barn. One was Uno, who greeted each of them with a nicker as they walked past. The next stall was that of A Royal Legacy. The stallion was a top racehorse, already. He was Grade Four just like Uno. His bloodlines, wow, what could you say? His lines were legendary. His sire was Merry Bay King, one of the top studs on GHF. His dam was a great racehorse and an even better broodmare. He was the half-brother to some of the most well-known horses on the GHF tracks. They were three Grade One winners. He truly was a 'royal' horse.
Lucy planned on racing him till he gained Grade One status. If it happened in the middle of the season, she would still retire him, no matter what. He had the greatest potential around. Lucy couldn't believe she was offered such a megastar horse. She was honored to take him in. She would keep him for life and have many foals of his. She couldn't wait till the time came.
Ariel went up to his stall door. He gazed at her contently, his head held high. He stood in a dark rear corner. He didn't make a move. The only sound was his breathing, which was calm and slow. "He looks so intimidating" Ariel said to Lucy. "Yes he does. I'm hoping his blue blood brings some popularity to Durango's stud book next year. Lucy said with a giggle. "What if he doesn't make Grade One by the end of the year?" "I know he will get to it this year. If not, he will be raced another year. I want to get him to Grade One before I retire him. I want him to accomplish what his mommy and daddy did, also his siblings. I want him to make a mark on the GHF courses for himself. He's a strong competitor.
Ariel knew what Lucy was saying. She was honored for this ride. She wanted to make it her best. Darby came out of the tack room, carrying Ariel's tack. She caught Ariel admiring the new resident. She made a huff sound and then said "That boy is quite a character. I could barely get in there to give him some oat mash earlier. He kept hovering over me like he was making sure I wouldn't make a mistake. Very mysterious." Lucy laughed. "He just needs to get used to things, Darb. He will get better. He just making sure you aren't giving him less than what he deserves." Darby rolled her eyes.
Lucy went to get Legacy out of his stall. He walked proudly out of the stall and into the aisle to be put on crossties. He glanced at Ariel as she walked up to his shoulder, letting Darby and Lucy get him groomed and tacked. He lowered his head and sniffed at her hand. He was a smaller horse. He wasn't as tall and fierce looking as some other DRS residents. His size made it easier to cover ground in a rush. She was good with the smaller horses. They were easier for her to handle.
"Sorry, boy. No treats. Wait till afterwards" she said. She reached up and stroked his shoulder. He raised his top lip. It was his soft spot, his favorite place for a scratch. She ran her fingernails into his shoulder, causing him to nicker and lower his head in relaxation. "Wow, he's really taking a liking to you" Darby said as she watched what was happening. Ariel could only smile. Legacy stomped his hooves and she stopped scratching.
Soon she was riding him out to the dirt oval. Lucy and Darby lead them. Once they reached it, Legacy knew what was coming. He hopped off to the side a little. He was always calm when he was by himself, but in a race he was more aggressive. Ariel could handle him either way and enjoy the ride. He was a dual surface horse. Lucy was putting him out on the dirt for this work. He didn't race much on dirt and she wanted to see how he would handle it. She knew it would be no problem.
Legacy adjusted quickly into a nice jog as Ariel rode him out onto the oval. He was a steady ride, so far. Ariel kept him well collected. She wasn't going to let him rush the bit. She stayed quiet in the saddle and let him have a good warm-up. It was going to be a 10 furlong breeze. Lucy had given her the details.
Once the marker came, Ariel set him free. He was calm and collected at first. He had a good blow out of speed, but he didn't rush himself. He was good at saving himself for the end and barely losing any breath. He was very laid back. They rounded the final turn quickly. She could feel him opening up more. He danced around to the stretch. He kicked it into another gear and his little legs pulled him forward with great speed and power. He opened up and blasted down the stretch. He dashed by the finish.
Ariel was impressed. He was a fast little horse with a huge heart and fantastic bloodlines. She surely was honored to have the chance to ride him. She cooled him out and sent him back to the barn to a few apple treats. He deserved it.
