*Letting Him Fly*
Horse: Gratis
Rider: Connor Stewart
Connor was given the ride on Gratis, one of the new residents from Arrowhead Stables. The colt was just coming off a recent win in the Greasy Giraffe Stakes. Lucy entered them in the Insight Stakes on the TW course. She wanted Grits to give it his all and keep him from getting too cooped up from not racing so much. She planned on having a break for the first half of her horses somewhere in May. She had a feeling he would be one of them for that break.
Connor climbed aboard the big colt when they reached the turf course. Gratis bounded onto the track. He was happy go lucky. He might've been just a little too perky for Connor, but he hung on for the ride and didn't let the colt get away from him. It would be just a small and short workout. Just a 7 furlong breeze. It would suit him well. It would be a quick work for the both of them.
Connor urged him up to a canter. The colt had a mega stride. He covered a lot of ground at one time. He was a big, lanky horse. Breaking his maiden his first time out, faired well for him. Lucy was hoping to have some success with him. Connor would remain his rider. Lucy would be sure of that. She knew Connor suited him as a rider. He was quiet and that's what Grits needed in a rider.
They rounded the turn, seven furlong marker not too far ahead. Connor was ready to let him go. When he did, Grits bounded out in a lengthy stretch of power. He flew down the backstretch, giving it his all. Connor held him back a little, not wanting him to waste his energy. He dashed around the turn and exploded down the stretch. Connor flashed the whip and Grits went faster. His quick pace hardly wore him out when he finished the quick breeze. Connor pulled him up and rode him over to Lucy. She was very pleased with his work. "He's ready for the race." She said. She walked with them back to the barn.
