Connor is a quiet man. He doesn't ever really say much or show any emotions, but when it came to riding the new black stallion that had arrived at the stable, he couldn't help but smile. His eyes lit up when Lucy and Spur lead Jax out of the barn. His coat sparkled in the sunlight. He was neatly tacked. The big horse turned his head Connor's way as he paused in front of him. Connor raised a hand and ran it down Jax's face. Jax nickered softly, lowering his head so Connor could scratch his ears, something he liked.
Spur walked on, the stallion tagging behind him. Jax got pushing, shoving a shoulder into Spur's side. His energy was pouring out just as they were heading towards the turf course. He bolted sideways. Connor walked beside Lucy. She had her clipboard in hand and was writing notes down. Then, she lifted her head and admired the big black horse tugging and budging the groom ahead of them.
"He is so full of it. He is going to make a wonderful addition here at Durango. Can't wait to get him on that track." she said. "Do you already have him entered?" Connor asked. "You boys will be running in the Green Horse Turf on Week 3. I feel that is a good race for him to start the season." Connor nodded in response.
Their attention turned ahead, again. Spur was keeping a strong hold of Jax as they stood at the opening in the rail. Jax was ecstatic. He was anxious to get onto the track. He was getting impatient. He wanted to get out there. Spur gave Connor a leg up onto the stallion. Jax balked to the side, again, as Connor gathered the reins. "Take him ten furlongs. That's the length of the race. He's got some tough competition in it, but I believe it's a good race for him. I feel he will be very comfortable with it." Lucy said. Connor nodded and took Jax through the opening.
He let him get a feel for the turf course. Jax had his head high, taking in all the surroundings. He transitioned very well into Durango Stables. He was happy to be back out on the course. He loved the freedom. He jogged gallantly. Connor was perched high in the saddle. He let Jax do his thing and get comfortable with his surroundings. He wanted him to be warmed up enough before he took him on the real ride.
Connor saw Lucy and Spur at the rail. Lucy tipped her head to the side with a bob, signaling for him to start the run soon. He knew Jax was ready. He could feel him tense up. He could feel all the power and energy stored inside. He picked up the pace a little, a steady canter. Jax was lively and well balanced. He was ready for whatever Connor would ask of him.
The ten furlong marker was fast approaching. Connor tightened his grip on the reins. He was waiting for any move the massive horse would make. He leaned in close and gave the signal. Jax was off. He was a fierce competitor. Connor knew of this. He was off like a flash, but not too overpowering. He was a strong closer. Those final furlongs was where he would make his room and fight to the front, leaving the other horses in the distance. He was a fierce runner. He always had a load of energy for every race.
They were galloping down the backstretch. Jax had a comfortable stride. Connor stayed quiet. He was letting the horse show him what he was made of. He saw the final turn ahead. He knew Jax would shift into another gear when he pulled out into the stretch. The turn came. Jax slowed up a little, but not enough to ruin his gain. When that stretch laid out in front of them Jax shifted further. His long stride gave him an advantage. The finish neared and he was all-out. He had gone the fastest he could, pouring himself into every stride as he sprinted to the finish.
Connor was impressed. Lucy gave a thumbs up when they cantered by her as he pulled Jax up. "Good job boy" the quiet man said. He ran his fingers through Jax's mane. He was the one breathing hard. Jax didn't hesitate a breath at all. It was a perfect run. Connor was looking forward to what Jax would show in an actual race. He couldn't wait.
