*This Is His Time*
Horse: Crackerjack
Rider: Connor Stewart
Cracker was anxiously awaiting Connor's arrival. Lucy was waiting with Spur. Connor was running later. Cracker was groomed, tacked, and ready to get on the track. Lucy glanced at her watch "If he's not here in five minutes, I will take Cracker J out." she said. Spur nodded in response. Everyone thought Connor was quiet. Spur never said a word to anyone. It was a rare moment if he did. He loved being around the horses, though. He wished to be back out on that track on Thoroughbred's back. If he did, he would risk being crippled for the rest of his life.
A few minutes later Ariel's car came down the drive. Lucy's mouth dropped. Where's Connor? she thought. Then, in the passenger seat, was Connor. Word was spreading that the two of them had a thing going on. Connor leaned over, gave Ariel a kiss, and got out in a hurry. He knew Lucy was upset with him. She just gave him a look and pointed to Cracker, who was standing intently. Spur quickly gave Connor a leg up and they all went down to the dirt course.
Cracker was bucking and kept ramming his head into Spur's side. He was fired up. His first work was very brief. This was only his second work, ever. Lucy knew he needed the training. She was determined to get him to break his maiden. He had a lot of potential, just like all her other horses. Cracker was giving Connor a hard time. Spur had let go of his bridle and just let them trot on. Connor trotted him right onto the dirt course. A few more bucks and a shrill whinny and Cracker was good to go.
Connor had him under control as they began jogging. Cracker had a beautiful stride. He was a pretty sight on the track. His copper coat glowed in the faint sunlight. Connor was quiet in the saddle. He would soon urge the colt into a breeze. When he did, the colt jumped right into it and busted down the backstretch. He was determined to get off to that finish line with a good time. He was a speed demon going around that turn. This was his time. They rounded out and into the stretch. Connor flapped the whip and used it. Cracker increased his speed. He ran his heart out the whole way down the stretch.
Lucy was extremely pleased with his small work. It was just a warm up to keep him energized and awake. He would have a big work in February. For now, this was all he was going to have. He was ready for his race. He wouldn't disappoint.
