*Another Day in Paradise*
Horse: Paradise Island
Rider: Lucy McCummins
This was it. Lucy couldn't believe having a true champion in her barns. It was a huge honor for her. She wanted to have the honor of being the first one at DRS to ride Paradise Island. The mare was aimed for the Breeders Cup. Though Lucy said if her racing season wasn't the best, she would retire her early. She had no doubts though.
Sonja was out in her paddock, a sheet on her. She was grazing in the sunlight, which brought warmth to the otherwise chilled day. Lucy walked up to the gate and just stood there admiring the bay. Sonja was in her prime. She briefly lifted her head to glance at Lucy, who flashed a smile. Sonja thought nothing of it and continued to graze. She recently came off a fourth place finish in the Breeders Cup Classic. Her last win was the Gold Coast Stakes back on November Week 3. She was raring to go for another race. Lucy wanted to keep her in top form. She had a loaded race record from last season. Lucy wanted to take it easy on her a bit, but still wanted her to remain at the top.
Lucy pulled her lead line from her jacket pocket. Sonja's head shot up, again. Her ears perked forward, nostrils flared as Lucy opened the gate. Sonja walked up to her. Lucy ran a hand along Sonja's back. She had been trying to create a bond with her from the very moment the mare arrived. Sonja was warming up, slowly but surely. She still had some time to go before she would trust Lucy. Lucy knew this. She was thrilled to have the beautiful bay in her presence. She clipped the lead to Sonja's halter and lead her back to the barn.
Darby and Ariel were there. Lucy had assigned Ariel as Sonja's rider. Though, she would've rather picked Chloe. Ariel's mouth was watering when Sonja arrived. Lucy really didn't have a choice. She didn't want to upset the young girl. It was bad enough the was sneaking around with Connor. Lucy kind of wanted her to go, but she stayed civil and professional. Darby and Ariel began grooming Sonja as Lucy went to the tack room to get her tack.
Sonja stood still. She would stomp a hoof every now and then, but she was calm as they groomed her to perfection and got her tacked up. She was being prepped for the Impressionante Derby. It was a good field of competitors, including Red Herring who she ran against in the Breeders Cup Classic. She had a great chance to win it, but Lucy didn't want to put her in races that would downgrade her from her popularity. She wanted to keep her in top races. For this workout, it would be 5 furlongs on the open dirt. She wanted to get a good quick run out of her. She wanted something to just stretch the mare's legs.
Darby lead them to the dirt course. Ariel walked beside them. She was there to see how Sonja would do and to get tips from Lucy afterwards. She was determined the win the Impressionante. She would do whatever it took. She wanted the mare to be perfect. She knew she would be. The mare had more talent than any of the other horses at DRS. She was the bomb. She was a wonderful addition.
Sonja perked her ears when Lucy trotted her through the opening to the dirt course. She moved gracefully. Lucy was perched high in the saddle. She eased up on the bit, not wanting to rough handle the mare. She wanted her to be as calm as she could possibly be. Sonja was glad to be able to stretch her legs. She liked the small rest, but she was ready to get back out on the track. She was ready to beat some more competition. She wondered if she would go against any of her old rivals. She would find out when the time came.
Lucy clucked her up to a brisk jog. The mare changed gears beautifully. Her strides were elegant and graceful. She stayed relaxed. She lowered her head, enjoying the stretch of her muscles. She was ready to run. She was ready to give it her all. She wanted to show Lucy what she was made of. She didn't want to disappoint her new owner. She wanted to make her happy and do everything she asked. She was determined to make it another great year. They were soon coming to the five furlong marker. It would be a fast breeze work.
Darby sounded the whistle and Sonja was off, without any command from Lucy. Lucy didn't mind. She hung on for the ride. She couldn't believe the power she felt beneath her. Sonja thundered around the turn. Once the stretch opened up in front of them, Sonja dug in and pulled further with all the strength she had. Lucy didn't have to do a thing. The mare knew what she was doing. She flashed down the stretch with great speed. They flashed by the wire and Lucy pulled her up to a trot. "Amazing!" Lucy said. She got Sonja cooled out and rode her back to the barn. She was most certainly ready for the Impressionante Derby. Lucy was sure of it. Sonja was an amazing mare. This would be her year.
