*Reggie's Fight*
Horse: Rigoletta's Song
Rider: Ariel Paisley
Reggie was eagerly awaiting Ariel's presence in the barn. She wanted to get back onto the track. She had a disappointing 4th place finish in the January Juvenile Dirt Faceoff. Lucy was planning on pointing her to a race for February Week 1. She knew the filly had talent to show. She knew she would have her chance to get a win under her belt and head out of the Maiden belt. She hadn't made it in the money, not even her Prospect season. Her time was coming.
Ariel arrived. She had a fresh shower and a cup of decaf coffee in her hand. She always had to have a cup every morning. It was the only thing that kept her sane. Her romance with Connor was sparking up. She knew there would be consequences. She overheard her sister, Chloe, talking to groom, Darby, about Lucy replacing her with Ash Martin, a young and vibrant jockey who rode for Arrowhead Stables. Ariel just hoped it wasn't true.
She entered the two year old barn. She heard the shrill whinny right away. Then, there was the kicking on the sides of the stall. Reggie loved her to pieces. She reached the big filly's stall. Reggie pushed her head out and nudged her shoulder. Ariel reached up to scratch behind Reggie's ears. "I'm happy to see you, too, big girl." Reggie nickered softly, enjoying the affection. She was a big baby. Ariel really enjoyed being around her. She surely put a smile on her face every time she saw her.
Lucy appeared from the tack room with Ariel's tack. She sat it down. She motioned for Ariel to get Reggie out of her stall. Ariel did so, placing her on crossties. Lucy was quiet, which was odd. Ariel thought back to what she heard Chloe and Darby talking about. She just hoped it wasn't true at all. Lucy was now a rider for DRS. She took over the reins of Paradise Island, Black Magic, and Luciana. They were her babies. She was a fantastic rider and Ariel knew she would prosper greatly on the racetrack. She was just wishing, at that moment, Lucy would talk to her, even if it was just a word. Quietness lingered as they got Reggie tacked.
Lucy gave Ariel a leg up and lead them out to the dirt course. "Just a good 9 furlong breeze will be fine for her, today. I'm giving her a week off. Then, will find a race to put her in for the first week of February. I'm trying to get them all racing at least every other week. I'm trying to keep them all strong, giving a week or so off in between. Monthly rests will occur towards spring and summer." she said, finally. "Sounds good to me. Reggie will get into the money soon. Hopefully she will get up there in her next race." Ariel replied. "I sure do. I hate when they go through slumps, especially maidens." Lucy added.
Soon Ariel was trotting Reggie onto the dirt course. The filly pranced playfully. She was thrilled to be back out to do her job. Her stride was always long and elegant. Ariel gave her some rein and clucked her to a jog. The warm-up went well. The 9 furlong marker was approaching quickly. When it came, Ariel was quick at getting the filly into gear. Reggie was off. She pulled herself into a full speed gallop. They bounded around the first turn. Ariel kept the reins tight, holding back on the it, not letting the energized filly get away from her.
Down the backstretch, Reggie held up a little. She was galloping at a good pace. Her long stride carried her elegantly. They pounded around the final turn and headed into the stretch. Reggie's speed suddenly increased. She gave it her all. She thundered down the stretch, pulling away with each stride. Ariel gave her all the rein she needed to pull ahead further and further. They crossed the wire with a spectacular time. It was her best workout, yet. Ariel knew of it. She cooled her out and then gave her treats when they were back at the barn. Lucy was completely pleased with the work. She knew it would get her into the money in her next race.
