*Heart of Strength*
Horse: Heart of Rio
Rider: Lucy McCummins
Rio was still waiting to have a race for the season. She hadn't raced since October. Lucy was hoping the long layoff would be an advantage for her. Rio was a classy runner. She was due to run in the Upper Deck Derby, Week for at The Wire. Lucy was transporting her to The Wire barns in a few days. She wanted to get one good workout in before then. She knew the filly would come into the season with a bang.
Rio was all tacked and ready by the time Lucy made it out to the barns. Darby and Chloe were there. Lucy grabbed her helmet and Chloe gave her a leg up. Rio's head shot up. She knew what time it was. It was time for her to finally get back out on that track. She was fresh and ready to go. Once her feet hit the dirt, she settled nicely and gracefully trotted down the backstretch. Lucy kept a soft hand on the bit. Rio danced along the surface. She kept her head high, proudly, and snorted with excitement.
Coming around the turn, Rio jumped up into a brisk canter. She did it on her own. Lucy gave her a little rein and let her go her own way. Rio's muscles rippled under her skin as she cantered around the turn and into the stretch run. They cantered all down the stretch and around the far turn. When they reached the 8 furlong marker, Lucy tapped her shoulder with the whip and she burst out into a high speed gallop.
They galloped down the back stretch. Rio put all her strength and energy into it. This was what she wanted. She needed to get back on the track. She would prove to her new owner that she was a worthy racehorse. They bounded around the final turn. Down the stretch they went. Lucy tapped her flank with the whip. Rio was off like a bullet when they came down to just 2 furlongs left. She was going the fastest she had ever went. When they passed the finish, Lucy pulled her up and patted her on the shoulder. "Great job, Rio." She said. She was impressed with the run. Rio would flourish in her first race of the season.
