*Making Her Debut*
Horse: Luciana
Rider: Lucy McCummins
The filly was fierce, but Lucy was ready for her. She admired the liver chestnut coat with the blonde mane and tail as Darby lead her from her paddock. The filly reared and let out a fierce whinny. Lucy couldn't do anything but smile. It was her new filly, her namesake, Luciana. Ana was a demonic filly with high spirits and a wild temperament. Lucy had fallen in love with her. She held a special place in her heart, as did Black Magic. Ana glanced her way and nickered. She wanted Lucy to pet her. Lucy placed a hand on her shoulder to calm her as they made their way into the barn.
Darby just shook her head as she noticed how soothed Ana was just by a single touch from Lucy. "This girl has been here for only three days and already you have her wrapped around your little finger." the groom said as she placed Ana on crossties. Lucy just smiled as she grabbed a brush and began brushing the dirt from Ana's coat. "I can't help it. Everyone is going to think I'm crazy for getting a maniac like this, but she's my maniac. She will always be mine. I don't think I will ever be able to part with her." Lucy said. Ana was completely calm, her head lowered as she enjoyed the massage from the brush.
Darby just shook her head with a smile as she went into the tack room. Lucy had a way with all of the horses. She was a great trainer and rider. She couldn't wait to start her career as a jockey, as well. She would have her first race with Ana in the Magic Wand Maiden. She was the only one the filly would allow to ride her. She is a devil in the barns and an angel on the track. Lucy knew she would make quite an impression on the racetrack. She knew everyone would have their eyes on her.
Once tacked, Lucy mounted and Darby lead them towards the dirt track. It didn't last long. Ana fought Darby for her bit. "I got her." Lucy said as she gathered the reins tight. Darby nodded and stepped off to the side. Ana bucked. Once she realized Darby wasn't beside her, she instantly calmed down. Lucy rode her to the dirt course herself. She couldn't wait to get her out there. She couldn't wait for their first race. She knew the filly was a fireball. She had some of the highest potential. She would get to Grade One in no time. So far, she had to contend with two other horses in her first race, the Magic Wand Maiden. It shouldn't be too hard for her. It would be the perfect first race for Ana. Lucy was hopeful she would overpower the boys.
Lucy urged her to a canter. The filly extended her stride, almost instantly. She responded perfectly to Lucy's cues. Lucy would be taking her 8 furlongs for this first workout. Ana had blazing speed. Lucy noticed it when she stayed in her paddock and galloped around. Ana was sound under saddle. Especially with Lucy riding her. They were an inseparable pair. They were made for each other.
The starting gate was set up at the 8 furlong mark. Lucy wanted to see how well Ana would break from the gate. Darby was there. She helped lead Ana into the gate chute. Ana balked badly. She reared up. Lucy clung to her mane. When the filly came back down, Lucy leaned down and stroked her shoulder. "It's okay, beautiful. I got you. Everything is going to be all right." She said. They tried again. Once again, Ana backed away. She was afraid. She wasn't really used to a starting gate. Lucy rode her around in a few tight circles to calm her, all the while talking to her in a soothing voice.
Darby shook her head. She pulled a hand towel from her jacket pocket. She wrapped it over Ana's eyes and tucked it into the cheek straps of her bridle. She steadily lead her into the chute, closing it behind her. She filly reared up, the noise startling her. Lucy went back to stroking her neck and talking to her in a soft voice. Ana soon settled again. She pressed her nose against the bars in front of her. She didn't know what it was. The gates opened. She reared up, startled at the noise, but once she saw she was free, she dashed ahead at the speed of light. Lucy grabbed a chunk of mane and rode her on.
They dashed down the backstretch. Ana's hooves pounded the surface with clumps of dirt flying up behind her. Lucy guided her around the turn. She swung around it and powered down the stretch. She pulled herself forward and forward, increasing speed and lengthening stride. Lucy kept the whip in her back pocket. She didn't need it. The filly was pouring her heart out into the stretch run. They got closer and closer to the finish. Away they flew, past the line and onward.
Ana wasn't ready to stop. She wanted to keep going. Lucy pulled her back to a trot. She patted her neck. The fireball was finally able to be set free. She knew she would be a hard one to beat. She was just as strong as any colt and had much more heart. She was a one of a kind horse.
