*See The Magic*
Horse: Black Magic
Exercise Rider: Connor Stewart
Connor went to the stall of one of Durango's newest two year olds. It would be his first workout at his new home. The colt was a stunning prospect runner. Lucy was looking forward to him prospering even more for his two year old season. It was just Connor for this one, along with groom Spur Douglas.
Houdini has great bloodlines. His lineage went back a couple generations at GHF. He was already a great racehorse, but it was just the beginning for him. He had a few great years left. Lucy already planned on retiring him to stud after his 5 year old season. She couldn't wait for that day. For now, he was still young and prosperous. He had a lot of talent to show. His paddock mate was Izzy. The two colts got along very well.
Spur gave Connor a hand with the grooming and tacking. He gave Connor a leg up and let him do the rest so he could go back to his work. The colt didn't budge too much. He pretty much stayed steady and calm. The turf course was soon ahead of them. Connor felt the colt tense up a little. He was ready to fly. Connor ran his fingers through the colt's mane. He didn't say a word. He wanted to remain quiet. He wanted to see how Houdini responded to his leg and hand cues. That's how he was. He was pretty much a quiet rider, even in races.
The trotted through the opening. The lush grass was all around them. Houdini loved the quiet. It gave him a relaxed feeling. He just went along at a trot until the heels dug in and the reins loosened lightly. He responded by changing into a canter. Connor smiled. He didn't keep the colt at a canter for long. It was time to see what he was made of.
Heels dug and reins loosened, again. Houdini knew what it meant. He switched to a full on gallop really quickly, causing him to stumble a tad, but he kept his ground. Connor gave him the rein he needed to stretch out. His muscles loosened out as he flew around the track. Connor leaned close to his neck. He wanted to put a little pressure on his front legs. It didn't bother Houdini none. He kept going at his pace. Connor nodded to himself and eased back in the saddle. The colt flowed incredibly well. There was still plenty left in him when he pulled him up after he finished 12 furlongs. He rubbed the colt's ears as he rode him off the course and back to the barns. He was very satisfied.
