*Dis Gurl Haz It*
Horse: Mardi Gras
Rider: Connor Stewart
Connor knew this morning meant business as he climbed out of his truck and headed towards the DRS barns. He was looking forward to his ride on Mardi Gras. Lucy was planning on pointing her towards the Triple Tiara. She wanted Elise to make a name for herself. She was planning on retiring her to breed in Year 16 and already had a reserve to a top Grade One stallion, The Underdog. Lucy fell in love with the young filly. She knew she would do great things. The filly most certainly had it all.
Lucy and Spur were grooming the black beauty to perfection when Connor entered the barn. The familiar blaze turned his way. Elise nickered a welcome as he walked up to her. He just smiled and scratched her forelock. She was a big filly, by far the tallest in the barn. She was built like a young stallion, all muscular and big boned. She was an eye catcher on the track. Connor only rode her a couple times. They were a great team. Lucy had big plans for her, on and off the track.
Once tacked, they all headed towards the dirt course. Connor and Spur were holding Elise's bridle as Lucy followed behind them. She was, of course, jotting notes down on her clipboard. She always kept everything all tidy and neat. She was a neat freak. She adored every single one of her horses. She had recently been busy with the mares in foal, lately the past few weeks. Now, it was Unicorn Horn time. She had seven entrants in the Unicorn Horn races, including Elise.
Once they reached the dirt oval, Spur gave Connor a leg up onto the huge filly. Elise raised her head and pranced in place. She couldn't wait to get back on the track. The two weeks off seemed to fair well for her, but Lucy was planning on getting her into more races. She wanted her to stay in top form. "A mile will do her good, this time. Keep her comfortable and let her do her thing. She knows what she wants." Lucy said to Connor. He nodded his head in response and gathered the reins.
Soon he was jogging Elise along the outside rail. The long strides carried them along at a quick pace. She was fresh and fit. She could jog for miles, if he let her. She was a high class filly with a will to win. Connor enjoyed riding her. She was one of his favorite mounts. They were an incredible pair. He stayed quiet in the saddle, as he always did. He kept a firm hand on the reins and kept light in the saddle. He was ready for his upcoming rides in the Unicorn Horn. He had been training hard with his rumored girlfriend, fellow DRS jockey Ariel Paisley.
Elise let out a rough snort, knocking Connor from his daydream. She knew when his thoughts were elsewhere. She was smart in sensing those sorts of things. Connor knocked his gazing thoughts out of his mind and focused on the filly he was riding. They continued at a jog. Once they reached the mile marker, he took her a couple more furlongs. Then, they crossed through the gap and he rode her onto the inside rail, where he urged her to a canter.
Elise didn't let up. The mile marker was approaching. Connor gave signal and Elise shot off into a fast gallop. She was a strong closer. She liked to hold back early in the race, then dig in into the stretch and keep digging till she reached the wire. She was an excellent long distance runner. She ran steadily as they rounded the first turn and headed into the backstretch. Connor held her up, not wanting her to waste all of her energy, but she knew not to push herself. She kept at a steady pace, her long strides carrying them quickly.
Entering the final turn, Connor flashed the whip, trying to get an early surge from her. She responded automatically. She pulled ahead at a quicker pace as they bounded around the turn. When they came into the stretch, she dug her heels in and pushed herself further and further, faster and faster. She was a ball of strength and energy. Lucy was jumping up and down at the rail, a huge smile on her face. It was Elise's best work yet.
They surged down to the wire. Once past, Connor gave a quick pat on Elise's shoulder. He was surprised at the amazing workout. The two week layoff was what was best for Elise. She was ready for anything. Lucy was impressed. She gave Connor a high five and Elise an affectionate pat on the neck. She was a promising young horse with a long racing career ahead of her.
