*UH Here We Come*
Horse: Daddy's Overdraft
Rider: Ariel Paisley
For: Unicorn Horn Turf
The ghost white filly forced herself out of her stall as she pushed Ariel into the barn aisle. "Whoa, Cobs. Easy." Ariel said. She put the crossties on Cobweb, quickly. Ariel was on her own this morning. Lucy had told her to take Cobweb a mile on the turf. All the Unicorn Horn entrants were having mile works. Cobweb's next race would be a Triple Tiara Turf prep race. Lucy felt she would flourish in the TTT. She was focusing Cobweb on that.
Ariel had a grooming box handy. She reached and grabbed a brush. Cobweb's white gray coat gleamed when she was finished. The filly was stomping her hooves impatiently. She was raring to go. She didn't like to wait around for long. She was just off a win in the Jump Start Cup from two weeks ago. Lucy had given her a week off, which is what she needed. It didn't satisfy the young filly, though. She wanted to run every week. She hated being cooped up in her stall. Even her time out frolicking in the paddock didn't seem to faze her. It wasn't enough. She needed to be out on the track, training or racing.
Once groomed, Ariel headed into the tack room to get her tack. She heard the loud whinnies and stomping of impatient feet. She heard the grunts and groans of a very impatient filly. Cobweb couldn't stand waiting. She whinnied again, just as Ariel came back. Then, Cobs snorted and pranced in place with excitement. She knew what was coming. She stilled, giving Ariel an easy time to get her tacked. Once she was done, Cobs was ready to get out of that barn and get onto the track. "Hang on. Just a minute." Ariel said.
Cobweb allowed her to mount. Then, she bolted out of that barn. She just about jumped on down to the turf course. Ariel smiled. "What is with you, today? she asked. The filly snorted in response. Her only care was to get out and run. She certainly showed her determination on the track. She had never finished worse than second place in any of her seven starts. She excelled on the turf. She could run all day without tiring. She was an extremely over confident horse. She didn't let anything get in her way. She was full of heart and energy.
Ariel trotted her onto the course. She pranced happily, eager to get her workout going. Ariel held her up, not letting her be free, yet. She perched high in the saddle, sitting quietly with soft hands. Cobs enjoyed being out there. She kept going at a steady pace. She felt a buzz when Ariel coaxed her to a canter. Cobweb was content. She was right where she wanted to be. She would impress Ariel in every way. She already had. Ariel enjoyed riding her.
Once they reached the mile marker, Cobweb shot off like a missile. They zipped around the first turn at a pretty good speed. Cobweb was laid back at this moment. She was a mid runner. She liked to hang back. The stretch was where she showed her true colors. She was an extremely strong closer. They headed quickly into the backstretch. Ariel gave her a little more rein. Cobs stretched out a little more. She kept calm and settled. She flew down that track like a hawk. She didn't break a sweat. There was still plenty of energy left inside her.
The final turn came fast. Ariel flashed her whip past the filly's eye. That sent the beautiful gray into another gear. She pulled ahead, pouring herself into the stretch. She was one of the strongest closers out there. She pulled on even more. Ariel hand rode the filly down the stretch. She gave another flash of the whip and Cobs dug in some more. She exploded into high speed as they reached the wire. She hadn't lost any breath and didn't break a sweat.
Ariel pulled her down to a trot. She patted her firmly. "That was amazing. You will make it to Grade One in no time. That Unicorn Horn race is ours. They better watch out!" she said. The filly snorted in response. Her energy wasn't spent. She cooled out perfectly. Then, they headed off to the barns.
