*Loving The Turf*
Horse: Avatar
Rider: Chloe Paisley
Avis had yet to finish in the money. Lucy wasn't going to give up on him. Chloe was glad. She was taking him out onto the turf for his first time on the surface. He dashed around in his paddock, but this turf track was completely different. Chloe knew third time was the charm. She had a feeling he would win his next race. She just felt he would.
When Avis caught sight of the turf course, he threw his head around and pranced handsomely. He let out a loud snort and seemed to shiver with excitement under the saddle. Chloe shook her head with a smile. "You're so goofy." She said. He snorted, again, in response. He soon calmed as they made their way through the opening. Once his hooves hit the surface he dashed into a canter. Chloe kept her hand light on the bit, keeping him comfortable and satisfied.
They cantered along the outside rail. There were no other horses on the track. They were the only ones. Avis didn't have any distractions. It was just him, his rider, and the open green ahead of him. The air pulled at Chloe's face, sending chills down her spine. She stayed calm and relaxed. She didn't want to stir the fiery colt up. She knew how he could get.
Soon they were trotting across the gap and she turned him onto the inside rail. He turned his head towards the rail and pranced along. Excitement was building inside him. His muscles were getting bunched up as he readied for the cue to GO! Once given, he shot off like a bullet. He made his way to the first turn. Around he flew. Chloe was quiet in the saddle, leaving him to do what he wanted. He pulled on into the backstretch. Chunks of turf and dirt tossed up behind them as his heels dug in.
Avis didn't let up. He continued at this incredible pace. He poured himself into each stride. He kicked into another gear, a faster gear, when he rounded the final turn. Chloe tightened up the reins, hand driving him forward. She didn't have a whip on her, for she didn't need it. She knew what he wanted. Her hands urged him to a faster pace. He pounded down the stretch. The thunder of his hooves seemed to echo throughout the stable yard. "That's it boy! Keep going! Come on! she called. He was all out in a blinding speed.
They darted by the finish. She pulled him up. He wasn't breathing hard at all and he barely broke a sweat. He seemed to flourish on the turf. He would have no problem running over the new surface in a race. Chloe gave him a satisfied pat. He was ready for his next racing adventure.
