*Uno's Triumph*
Horse: Odd Number Out
Rider: Chloe Paisley
The sun was setting along the horizon. The bright lights around the turf course were turned on. Chloe was doing an evening work with Uno. He spent most of the day in his pasture. Lucy had met Chloe when she arrived at Durango. Chloe told her she could handle everything. Lucy had since gone inside after their chat. She was heading to bed early, tired from the big day she had. Chloe knew what she needed to do.
Entering the racing stock barn, she stopped to give Glory a slice of an apple. Most of the other horses were snoozing in their stalls. At the far end was where Uno was stabled with Nico and Ash. Them being stallions, they were stabled away from the others. She reached Uno's stall. He walked to the door and put his head over it. He nickered a friendly welcome to her. "Hey boy. I'm going to take you out for a little bit. It will be quick, I promise. You need to stretch your legs." She said. She reached a hand up and ran it down the front of his face.
Once tacked, she mounted and rode him out to the turf course. The lights shone brightly. They lit up most of the farm. The sun was still in view, barely. Chloe looked forward to this nightly ride. Especially with such an amazing horse. He hadn't had a win since September. He finished second in both of his starts of the year. Lucy was thinking of retiring him early if she didn't think he could hold on till the end of the year. It would either be him or Ash who would retire early, August or September, is what she was planning. Depended on how they both ran this season.
Chloe trotted Uno through the gap and settled him along the inside rail. He bowed his head and lengthened his stride. He was a big, elegant mover under the saddle. Just under 17 hands, he was a massive intimidator on the track. His long stride carried him quick over the surface. He loved the turf. He could run on it for days. He was a perfect example of an exceptional racehorse. Chloe enjoyed riding him. They got along very well. Lucy was fond of him. He was loved by all at DRS.
Urging him to a canter, Chloe leaned close to his neck. She peered between his ears. The sun just about disappeared. Uno increased his speed a little, eager to run. He kept his pace at a canter. He tugged at the bit. "Just another minute." Chloe said. He grunted in response. He wanted to go. Boy did he ever! When she pressed her heels, he darted forward, just about pulling her from the saddle with force. She hung on for her life as his strides lengthened and his pace strengthened.
They came to the turn before she could blink. He flew around the turn and into the stretch. Once he saw clear track ahead of him, he pushed himself along, kicking it into another gear as they flashed under the lights. His hooves thundered, echoing in the darkness of the stables. Chloe ran her hands up his neck, giving him more rein. He pushed to the wire, passing it, and throwing his head when she pulled him down to a trot. "Oh gosh, that was wonderful!" she said. She reached down to stroke his shoulder. He was such a magnificent horse. A win was in the coming future.
