*Magic In His Eyes*
Horse: Black Magic
Rider: Lucy McCummins
For: Spring Cup - Grade Five Dirt
Houdini was ready for his run in the Spring Cup Grade Five Dirt. He was running great on the turf, but it was time for the small change of surfaces. He would be starting at the middle of the pack against some great horses. Lucy knew he would have his chance to shine. He had the fire in his eyes.
Riding him out onto the track, Lucy could feel the power beneath her. She knew what the black colt was capable of. He ran exceptionally well on both surfaces. He loved the dirt. It was sprinkling a little, adding mist to the cool air. The track was slopped up just a bit. Houdini loved it. His hooves sloshed along as they cantered along the outside rail. She was giving him a nine furlong work. It was what he needed. He was in top form and had no flaws about him.
Lucy turned him along the gap and settled him on the inside rail. He kicked out his hind legs, giving a loud snort of appreciation. He was ready to go. When she gave him the rein, he was off thundering down the track. He shortened his stride as he narrowed the first turn. Then, he was off, again, pulling along at a great speed down the backstretch. Lucy could feel all the power beneath her. She kept him at a steady pace, not wanting him to waste his high energy.
His stride lengthened more as they flashed around the final turn. Once in the stretch, all out power. He forced himself into a faster pace. He pulled along. His hooves rumbled the ground as they made their way to the finish. His energy wasn't spent. He still had plenty to use. He wanted to give everyone something to talk about. He surely proved he had what it took to be a champion. He was an incredible horse. He loved to please. He was a force to be reckoned with.
Past the wire they flew. Lucy reached down to pat him on the shoulder after she pulled him down to a walk. He wasn't breathing heavily. He didn't have a speck of sweat on him. He could run forever. He was an amazing young horse who had a lot to prove.
