Rider: Connor Stewart
For: Spring Cup - Grade Five Turf
Horse 2: Immortal Flight
Rider: Chloe Paisley
For: Spring Cup - Grade Three Turf
Connor was the first one onto the turf course with Ally. The black mare was happy to be back on the track. She cantered on gracefully. She was one of the contenders in the Spring Cup series. She was running in the Grade Five Turf. Lucy thought she was ready for the step up in class. She had a good post. She would have a chance in the race. Lucy was sure of it. Going against the boys was a flaw, but that's why she was being brought in with Nico as a workout partner this morning.
Chloe brought up the rear with the big bay horse. Nico was running in the Grade Three Turf. He would be starting on the rail. The field was full of high class horses. He had yet to pull in a win, this year, but Lucy knew that win was coming. Could it be in the Spring Cup race? Nobody knew, but he would have a great run. They caught up with Connor and Ally. Ally nipped at Nico's neck. He whinnied diligently. He wouldn't let the smaller are get in his way.
The riders turned the horses towards the inside rail. Chloe got Nico cut around shorter, getting him ahead as she began cantering him along the rail. She would be riding in her last few races. She was pregnant and would be taking time off before she got too far along. She was still unsure of when she would be coming back. She only had a few more weeks of riding left. She already had a replacement. She was sad to go, but knew her unborn child was much more important.
Connor got Ally up to a canter. She extended her stride beautifully. She was a high class mare. She caught Nico in her view. She let out a snort and pushed on, gaining on the towering horse. She nipped at his flank as she came onto him. His pace quickened. "Let's let them go" Chloe said. Connor gave a nod. Then, off they went. Nico edged ahead of Ally, but that didn't last long. She took an opening on the rail and eased by him as they rounded the first turn.
Connor urged her on. He wanted her to flourish and flaunt her stuff. The big horse faltered a little, but he came up on her right away. They dueled along the backside. Ally didn't let up. She kept on flying. Her pace was steady and slightly stronger than Nico. He was saving himself up for the stretch run. He let her know he was still there. She could sense him at her side, even though her blinkers kept him out of her sight.
On they went, thundering into the last turn. Nico put a nose ahead and kept gaining on the fearless mare. Chloe took out the whip, as did Connor. They got their horses going into faster strides. Ally didn't give up the fight. She gained on Nico, again. She pushed herself to the brink. Connor had given her all the rein she needed. He put the whip away, knowing what she was capable of. He let her run on her own. She plowed down the track.
Nico kept the lead, not letting up one bit. Chloe was happy. She glanced under her arm and saw Ally fighting on with all of her might. She just couldn't make it in time as they flashed past the wire. It was a great run for the both of them. They were phenomenal horses.
