Horse 1: Barely A Sound
Rider: Ariel Paisley
Horse 2: Rigoletta's Song
Rider: Lucy McCummins
Whisper and Reggie waited patiently for their riders. Lucy and Ariel were in the tack room, discussing further details of their workout. It would be a mile run. A lot of things could happen during the longer workouts, especially when it involved more than one horse. The fillies were both maidens. Lucy really wanted to work with them. Ariel was the regular mount for both 2 year olds. Lucy was going to ride out on Reggie. She adored the young filly and thought she had a lot of potential.
Once the girls appeared in the filly's sights, Reggie and Whisper both gave a reluctant whinny. They were anxious to get out onto the dirt track. They wanted to run. Both would be having a month of rest for April. Lucy was unable to find a race to enter Reggie in so, the tall dark bay filly would wait till May to run, again. Both fillies stood tall in the aisle, on crossties. They waited as patiently as they could. Lucy and Ariel lead them from the barn.
Outside, the young horses got even more anxious. Reggie pranced in place as Lucy mounted. Whisper balked to the side when Ariel tried to mount her. She finally settled enough for her rider to mount. They rode the fillies to the dirt course. Flurries fell all around, but it didn't discourage them. They would run in anything. Lucy reached down to rub Reggie's shoulder. Both fillies were very tall. Reggie was 17 hands, maybe more, and Whisper was just shy of 17. They were two of the taller horses in the barn. Lucy was fond of the tall horses. She loved their strides, even if some of them ran very lanky-looking. She enjoyed watching them run and riding them.
On the track, Whisper bounded ahead. Ariel had her pick the pace up a little. Lucy held Reggie back, even though she badly wanted to reach her competition. It wasn't time to let them run, yet. They both needed to warm up. Ariel glanced under arm, making sure the other pair was a good distance behind them. She wanted Whisper to have a good lead on the other horse. She kept Whisper at a steady pace. The filly was way too relaxed but she was ready to let it all out.
Reggie wasn't going to have it. She pulled at the bit, wanting to go. Once she saw Whisper jump into a full gallop, she did the same. She caught up with her quickly. The fillies dueled around the turn. Reggie made a gain on the outside as they headed into the backstretch. Whisper stayed game on the rail. They thundered down the straight away. Whisper didn't let Reggie get away from her. It seemed to take forever till they reached the final turn. Reggie and Lucy were still ahead by a neck.
Ariel got the whip out and once it was used, Whisper responded diligently. She bared down Reggie's flank as they fought their to the wire. Reggie seemed to hold on, but Whisper just got a nose ahead of her. Past the wire they flew. Whisper showed she was the better filly, today, but Reggie had put in an exceptional run. They were both talented young horses. They would certainly dominate the track.
