*The Boy Named Crackerjack*
Horse: Crackerjack
Rider: Lucy McCummins
Lucy wanted to get out and get a ride in herself. She would be taking out Cracker for his first run. The 3 year old had never had a workout before. He was used to racing. Lucy would have to keep on her toes. His two year old season was very brief, only two races both 2nd place finishes. Lucy wanted to break him from his maiden. She thought about gelding him, but knew he would make a magnificent stud someday.
Cracker was awake in his stall, pacing from side to side. He let out a few shrill whinnies. He seemed to be a little nervous. He stopped and kept an eye on her as she opened his stall door, holding his halter. He playfully nipped at her. Then, he took a step forward and let her his halter over his head. "You're a goof" she said. She lead him out and placed him on crossties.
He stood patiently while she brushed his copper coat to a pristine sheen. She was surprised at how he calmed down so quickly. He kept turning his head around to get a look at her. Then, he started shaking his head up and down and stomping his hooves. Lucy didn't bother with him. She took her time. Soon she had him all tacked up. She mounted and rode him out to the dirt oval.
Cracker's head shot up as he saw the open track ahead of him. His ears perked forward. Lucy could feel him tense beneath her. The sun warmed the cool air. Cracker jumped happily, giving a little buck as Lucy urged him into a canter. He kept his head high. He was enjoying himself. He was waiting for this very moment. He was ready to become a winner. He was ready to prove to everyone that he had what it took to be a top horse.
Lucy hunched close over his withers. She felt him gather himself up. She clucked and he shot into a fast gallop. He carried her brisk fully around the turn. He was a front runner. He always had to remain in front of the others. He didn't like it when others would pass him. He ran like his hind end was on fire. Lucy held on and enjoyed the ride. She was very pleased with him. He made a mad dash for the finish.
Afterwards, she cooled him out and rode him back to the barn where she treated him to a few jellybeans. It was a great run for a horse with tons of potential.
