Ariel rode Ice out onto the turf course. The morning was cool and brisk. The sun rose behind the fog. The track was faded by the fog. Ice was mellow and sweet. Ariel really liked her. She was glad to have the mare in the barn, even though it was just for a little while. The gray mare trotted along the outside rail. She was relaxed and ready for the run. Ariel kept a good hold on the bit. She was relaxed, as well. It was a perfect combination, both horse and rider being relaxed.
Ariel turned Ice towards the inside rail. The mare obeyed commands. She headed into a canter as they circled around. The mare had yet to have a win for the season. Lucy was hoping for her first win of the season to happen under Durango colors. She just knew in her heart it would. They made their way around to the seven furlong mark. That's where Ariel gave the signal to go. The big gray mare was off in an instant. She just about yanked Ariel from the saddle. She was incredibly strong.
They dashed around the turn at blazing speeds. Ice didn't let up as they thundered down the stretch. She pushed herself more and more as they reached the finish. It was a quick run, but it was a delightful ride for Ariel. She patted Ice on the shoulder and pulled her down to a walk. She couldn't wait to get the mare into a race.
