*Party On Mardi Gras*
Horse: Mardi Gras
Rider: Connor Stewart
Elise loved the turf course. That's what Lucy had told Connor. Elise was the life of the party. She was a fierce filly with a heart of gold. Connor was certain things would turn around for her. There were rumors she would be retired at the end of the season to stand at brood. Lucy was still unsure of her plans for the massive black filly. She would have to wait and see.
Connor stood before the big black filly as Lucy and Darby were getting her tacked. He looked her in the eye. She was quiet and alert. She would be tested on the turf course this morning. Lucy was pleased with how she ran on the dirt. Now, it was time to see what the filly could do on the turf. She was excited to see how the filly reacted. Connor was too. He admired Elise as the girls finished up with her saddle. "Okay. We're ready to go" Lucy said.
The three of them walked the big filly down to the turf course. Darby had a hold on Elise's lead. "I want her to go 10 furlongs, this time. She seemed to do pretty well with that distance in her last work. I was pleased with how she ran. So, just do your thing and she will respond. I know you're quiet and she needs quiet hands" Lucy said to Connor. He just nodded his head. He didn't talk much. He was just focused on his riding. He was the silent master.
When they reached the course, Lucy gave him a leg up. Elise pranced in place. Connor felt he was floating in midair. She was a dainty filly. She was a true pleaser. Her muscles rippled as she danced in place. Connor urged her forward and she jumped right into a jog. She danced upon the grass as they moved around the oval. Connor was quiet in the saddle, as he always was. That's what Lucy liked about him. She knew some horses needed the gentle hands.
Elise was all spunk. Her long legs made her look so graceful. Connor kept a steady rein on her. He knew when he would make his move and he was ready for her to explode. He could feel her getting anxious. She was ready. She started to bunch up beneath him. She would dash out at any moment. He stayed quiet, holding her back. He wasn't going to let her get away from him. She wanted to badly. She needed to have her moment, her time to shine. She snorted loudly, thinking he was lost in thought but he responded.
Once given the needed rein and budge of heels, she was off like the speed of light. Connor was shocked by her burst of speed. He was able to handle it. She was a high class filly. She showed great determination. She was a pleaser. Connor knew of this. He knew she would do anything to make him happy. He let her go and do her thing. He was just along for the ride. She stayed calm since there were no other horses around her. Blinkers off, she was free to see everything around her, which made her feel free and at peace.
They rounded around the turn for the stretch. Her leads changed beautifully. Connor flashed the whip at the side of her neck. She caught eye of it and stretched with all her might. Her long strides covered the ground perfectly. He gave her the bit, let her go on her own. She showed him the heart she had. They flew down the stretch and finished with a great time. Connor patted her on the shoulder and pulled her up. It was a great work. He was truly impressed. He couldn't wait to see her heart pour out in a race.
